Restaurant Het Melkmeisje

Restaurant Het Melkmeisje opened its doors in 1990. Our dishes are inspired by the French cuisine, with fresh fish. Our specials can be found on the signs in our restaurant. The menu is renewed every half year.

Het Melkmeisje is situated in a historic building from 1731. During that time milk was being brought into the center of Amsterdam by a milkmaid, who came from the other side of the 'IJ', a river running through Amsterdam.

The dutch translation of 'Milkmaid' is 'Melkmeisje'. Hence the name of our restaurant. A plaque in the wall (see photo at left) of our restaurant is still there as a remembrance of this historic fact.

The Jugendstil bar in the restaurant has been built out of an old organ from the last century.

Restaurant Het melkmeisje is located at the Zeedijk, in walking distance of the Dam, the Nieuwmarkt, the Music Theatre (Muziektheater) and the Central Station (3 minute walk).

PS
Another Milkmaid can be found on the famous painting with the same name by Johannes vermeer.
